Shanae Bailey, Swenson Arts
& Technology’s outstanding
sprinter, got her introduction to
the Penn Relays at a young age.
Bailey, a 5-foot-4 junior, was a
student at Pastorius Elementary
School near Chelten Avenue.
“I actually started running
track in the second grade,” Bailey
said. “I went to Pastorius.
The coach said to me, ‘you look
like you can run. Do you want
to run?’ Then, I came back in
the sixth grade and started running
again.
“I went to the Penn Relays in
the seventh grade. I ran with
my school team. Then, I came
to high school. I’ve been running
in the Penn Relays ever
since. I really like the crowd. It
gets me hype. My teammates,
coaches and people are cheering
down there. It’s really exciting.
I enjoy it.”

Shanae Bailey coming off standout indoor season
Shanae Bailey
one of finest the women’s track
and field teams in the state. Actually,
they’ve received national
recognition. Bailey has been a
big part of that success. She
has excelled in the 100 and 200
meters. She has run a personal
best of 11.80 in the 100 and
23.99 in the 200 meters.
Bailey is coming off a good indoor
season. The Public League
champion sprinter placed
fourth at the Nike Indoor Nationals
in Boston, Mass. She
ran the 200 meters registering
an impressive time of 24.38. In
the PTFCA Indoor State Championship
Meet, she placed second
in the 200 meters with a
time of 24.76. She placed third
in the 60 meters in 7.77. In addition
to the sprints, she runs
the anchor leg on the 4x100
and 4x400-meter relay teams.
Last year, Swenson won the
Public League championship in
the 4x400 meter relay at the
Penn Relays. They placed second
to Paul Robeson in the Tri
State competition of the relays.
Bailey feels the team’s best
event is the 4x100 meter relay.
The team includes Vanessa
Mack, Antonia Ballard and
Jayee Wright.
“We’ve had a lot of success to-
gether,” said Bailey, who runs
with the Mt. Airy Track Club.
“We’re good friends. We usually
get together on the weekends
and go to the movies. We have a
lot of fun away from track.
We’re looking forward to the
outdoor season.”
Bailey has already received a
great deal of interest from a
number of Division I colleges for
her track and field talents.
Dean Lent, Swenson’s head
coach, feels Bailey has a great
future.
“Shanae is a tremendous
young lady,” Lent said. “She’s
done extremely well. As a runner,
she has gotten better and
better. She has made an impact
each year. She has actually
made an impact more and more
on the national scene. She’s
ranked nationally in a few
events. She does the right
things. She’s improved each
year. Shanae will keep working
over the next couple years.
We’re really proud of what she’s
done here.”
