The Bank of America series continues
with a special night of live entertainment on
Friday, July 18 at 7:30 p.m. This concert features
contemporary jazz singer and keyboardist
Frank McComb.
On Saturday, July 19 there will be a
Global Fusion Festival produced by the
Multicultural Affairs Congress along with
PECO and Independence Blue Cross. This
event, held from noon to 8 p.m., will introduce
local revelers to the wide range of
diversity from people of color from the
African continent to the Caribbean and Latin
America and also African American aesthetics.
The focus of this day will be on vendors.

In addition, the Southeastern Cherokee
Celebration will bring some Native
American heritage to Penn’s Landing on
Sunday, July 20 from noon to 6 p.m. This
event is also part of the 2008 PECO
Multicultural series at the Great Plaza. It is
hosted by the Southeastern Cherokee
Confederacy of Pennsylvania that also represents
the Navajo, Cree, Seminole, and Creek
ethnic groups.
Native American dancing and cuisine will
be the highlights of this festival. There will
also be more than 20 traders selling their
beading, finger weaving and leatherworks.
In addition, there will be Cherokee crafts,
jewelry, and musical instruments for sale.
Then, it’s time to return to the Bank of
America concert series featuring two-time
Grammy Award-nominee Ledisi and Stax
recording artists Lalah Hathaway. The latter
is the daughter of the legendary late singer
Danny Hathaway. She will be performing
selections from her fifth CD titled, “Self
Portrait.” Show time on Friday, July 25 is
7:30 p.m.
August continues the spirit of celebration
on Penn’s Landing. On Friday, Aug. 1 the
Smooth Jazz Summer Nights series kicks
off. This weekly series will begin with the
jazz saxophone sounds of Warren Hill. The
artists recently released a new CD on June
24. Thus, Philadelphia audiences will be
among the first to hear the new selections

The ACANA African Festival at the
Great Plaza continues the focus on Black
culture on Saturday, Aug. 9 from noon to 8
p.m. This is yet another extravaganza in the
PECO multicultural series of programming
in conjunction with Independence Blue
Cross. ACANA is an acronym for the African
American Cultural Alliance of North
America.
It’s time for the traditional recorded
sounds of the city when the Philadelphia
Doo-Wop Festival takes the stage at the
Great Plaza on Saturday, Aug. 9 from 1 to 7
p.m. Among those who will be performing
will be the Street Corner Five and The
Continentals.
One of the mainstays at Penn’s Landing is
the Caribbean Festival. The 2008 event will
be held on Sunday, Aug. 17 from noon to 8
p.m. This will also be held in the Great Plaza
at Market Street.
Perhaps one of the highlights of the summer
for African-American revelers will be
the Unity Weekend on the Waterfront. This
event marks a new partnership between
Clear Channel Radio and Penn’s Landing.
The traditional Unity Day will be relocated
from the Benjamin Franklin Parkway to the
SOJOURNER SUMMER 2008

waterfront’s Great Plaza this year. It will be
held on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 23 and
24 from noon to 7 p.m.
“As we mark the 30 th anniversary of the
WDAS Unity Day, we’re excited about
expanding the event to two days in partnership
with Penn’s Landing,” says Manuel
Rodriguez, president and market manager
for Clear Channel. “The resources, facilities
and accessibility of the Great Plaza at Penn’s
Landing make this the ideal location for celebrating
‘Unity Weekend on the Waterfront’
and our three decades of serving our community.”
The keystone of this weekend of events
will be the celebration of core values in the
African-American community including
family, pride and empowerment. This portion
of the program will be produced by
WDAS and Southwest Airlines. It will feature
food, children’s activities, vendors and
live entertainment.
If that’s not enough, the Penn’s Landing
summer fun will culminate with Radio
104.5’s Totally Free Concert on Saturday,
Aug. 30 from 3 to 9 p.m. This will also be
held at the Great Plaza.
Finally, the revelry continues into
September. The Mexican Independence
Day Festival will take place at the Great
Plaza on Sunday, Sept. 14 from noon to 8
p.m. Then, the summer activities conclude
with the 14th Annual Sippin’ By the River
extravaganza at the Festival Pier on Sunday,
Sept. 28 from 1 to 5 p.m. For more information
