ATWATER KENT MUSEUM OF

Museum, located just around the corner
from Independence Hall and the Liberty
Bell, is the gateway to Philadelphia history.
Founded over 60 years ago as the
city's history museum, the Atwater Kent
Museum of Philadelphia (AKMP) provides
many ways to learn about the city.
BRANDYWINE RIVER MUSEUM, Route
1, Chadds Ford, Pa., (610) 388-2700 -
exhibits collections of paintings by various
American artists. Open seven days a
week, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission,
adults $5; students and senior citizens
over 65, $2.50; children under 6 admitted
free.
BRANDYWINE WORKSHOP, 730 S.
Broad St., (215) 546-3675 - founded in
1972 as a non-profit multi-cultural institution,
it has hosted many artists of Hispanic,
Asian, African and Native American
descent. It promotes and supports artistic
works through training and special residency
programs. Each year the organization
presents the prestigious James Van Der
Zee award. Open Mon.-Fri.11 a.m. to 5
p.m.; by appointment only on weekends.
GARDEN STATE DISCOVERY MUSE-
UM, 16 N. Springdale Rd., Cherry Hill,
NJ, (1/2 mile North of Route 70) (609)
424-1233 - New Jersey is full of African-
American history including the home of
the first Black voter in the U.S., Thomas
Mundy Peterson, and the former site of
a training institution once regarded as
the “Tuskegee Institute of the North.”
Untap this history and more at this
museum. Open Tues.-Fri. 9:30 a.m. to
5:30 p.m., Sat. 9:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.,
Sun. 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Admission,
$6.50 for children and adults, children
under 18 months admitted free, grandparents
and seniors, $5.50.
FRANKLIN INSTITUTE SCIENCE MUSE-
UM, 20th St. & Benjamin Franklin Pkwy.,
(215) 448-1200 - home to the Benjamin
Cultural Canvas
Franklin National Memorial, this museum
houses some of the most exciting scientific
exhibits in the state. Visitors can walk
through a human heart, ride a 350 ton train
or finger paint at the touch of a button. Open
Mon.-Thurs., 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Fri.-Sat.,
9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sun. 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
