STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Josh
Hull’s new look is causing a stir
at No. 5 Penn State.
The middle linebacker’s new
mustache is drawing doubletakes
and lighthearted barbs
from teammates.
Hull said he got the idea after
watching old games between
Northwestern and Penn State
with teammate Mickey Shuler.
Most players sported bushy
mustaches in their head shots.
“I’m going for a “Wild West”
thing,” Hull joked Wednesday.
Temple travels to
battle Penn State
The Temple Owls will clash
with No. 5 ranked Penn State
on the road in Happy Valley on
Saturday. The kickoff is set for
Noon at Beaver Stadium.
Under the direction of head
coach Al Golden, Temple
returns to action following a
27-24 loss to Villanova at Lincoln
Financial Field for the
inaugural Mayor’s Cup.
Redshirt junior quarterback
Vaughn Charlton went 19-of-
28 for a career-high 317 yards
and two touchdowns. Junior
wide receiver Michael Campbell
scored his first TD and led
the receivers with 93 yards on
ive catches. Running back
Kee-ayre Griffin gained 70
yards on 21 carries and scored
one touchdown against the
Wildcats.
The meeting marks the
fourth contest of a seven-game
series between Temple and
Penn State, with five games
scheduled at Beaver Stadium
(Nov. 11, 2006, Sept. 20, 2008,
Sept. 19, 2009, Oct. 9, 2010,
Sept. 15, 2012) and two games
slated for Lincoln Financial
Field (Nov. 10, 2007, Sept. 17,
2011). Saturday’s game also
marks the third meeting (and
second at Beaver Stadium)
between Golden (Penn State
alumnus) and his mentor Joe
Paterno, who is in his 44th
season as head coach at Penn
“I’m just trying to have some fun
and relax a little bit.”
He’s endured some teasing,
too.
“Has he got a mustache,”
coach Joe Paterno jokingly asked
when quizzed by a reporter on
Hull’s look. “I guess I’ve seen it,
but I haven’t noticed it. As long
as it’s not coming down to his
neck, is it?”
Don’t look for quarterback
Daryll Clark to sport the look,
either.
“That’s ugly on me, period,”
said Clark, who has a trimmed
mustache. “It’s ugly on Josh too,
Al Golden
State.
Nationally ranked, Penn
State is 2-0 on the season after
home wins over Akron (31-7)
and Syracuse (28-7). Junior
running back Evan Royster is
the Nittany Lions’ leading
rusher with 102 yards on 26
carries. Senior quarterback
Daryll Clark is 49-of-71 for
593 yards and six touchdowns
in tow contests. Junior wide
receiver Graham Zug is the top
receiver with 141 yards on 11
receptions and two TDs.
Lincoln to host
powerhouse Shaw
Lincoln University coming off
I try to tell him all the time.”
Still, the rest of the Nittany
Lions are willing to overlook
Hull’s facial flaws given his solid
play this year, with 15 tackles
and one interception.
“You know what, let it stay on,
because he’s playing lights out,”
Clark said.
CONFIDENT CAPTAIN: Penn
State’s quarterback had a feeling
that the Nittany Lions’ first two
opponents would overplay the
run.
His position coach, Jay Paterno,
told him as much during
pregame preparations, so Clark
a 29-8 victory over Southern
Virginia will host CIAA powerhouse
Shaw University on Saturday
at 1 p.m. The game will
be played at Avon Grove High
School in West Grove.
Shaw ranked No. 5 in the
SBN Black College Football Poll
is the only undefeated team in
the league. The Bears feature
running back Raymond
Williams, the league’s leading
rusher, averaging 104 yards a
game. Shaw has a 3-0 overall
record.
The Lions (2-1) are led by
quarterbacks Kareem Dennis
from Lincoln High and Brandon
Austin. Chris Darby is
Lincoln’s leading rusher with
154 yards on 30 carries. Darby
is averaging 5.1 yards a game.
Drexel to play at
Niagara on ESPN
Drexel will play on ESPN
against Niagara University as
part of ESPN’s second annual
College Hoops Tip-Off
Marathon on Nov. 17. The
Dragons and the Purple Eagles
will play at 8 a.m. the first time
the network has ever televised
live college basketball at that
time.
This is the second straight
season the Dragons are participating
in the event. Last year,
Drexel defeated Penn in the
Daskalakis Athletic Center in a
game that started at 10 a.m.
— Compiled by Donald Hunt
said it isn’t a big surprise that
Penn State has struggled on the
ground so far in 2009.
The Nittany Lions are averaging
just 107 yards a game, a
measly figure for a team that features
Evan Royster, the Big Ten’s
top returning tailback.
“He didn’t say we were going to
struggle in the running game ...
but usually when guys stick
seven, eight guys in the box, we
can’t block everybody,” Clark
said about Jay Paterno’s advice.
The rushing attack and shortyardage
situations are the most
glaring holes on a team that has
otherwise cruised to two decisive
victories.
While the offense wants to get
Royster going, the team is still
splitting the reps in practice
evenly between running and
passing plays. “We don’t want to
harp too much on the run game.
(Coaches) have kept everything
the same way,” Clark said.
Joe Paterno also told Clark in
preseason that the quarterback
would have to remain patient as
an offensive line that features
three new starters and two
returnees in different positions
gets up to speed.
“We’re young up front, new up
front. The O-line is the unit that
takes the longest to jell, and
they’ve shown that,” Clark said.
“It’s only going to get better, I
guarantee you.”
UNDER THE WEATHER: Linebacker
Navorro Bowman is listed
as “possible” on this week’s
injury report for the Temple
game, and Paterno viewed the
midweek practice sessions as an
important sign whether the junior
could play.
Bowman has been bothered by
a right groin pull that hampered
him preseason. He aggravated it
in the season opener against
Akron, pulling himself out of the
game in the first quarter.
Paterno said he would monitor
how Bowman responded in practice
on Tuesday.
Asked Wednesday about Bowman’s
progress, Hull only said
that his teammate was at practice,
“participating in some
things, but didn’t see much
action.”
Bowman may not be needed
much anyway against the overmatched
Owls. Nathan Stupar,
who has 17 tackles, and Bani
Gbadyu have been solid replacements
next to starters Hull and
Sean Lee.
ON THE CORNER: CB A.J.
Wallace has gone from coach Joe
Paterno’s doghouse to nearly
climbing into the starting lineup.
The depth chart lists as either
Wallace or fellow senior Knowledge
Timmons as the potential
starters at left cornerback.
A month ago in preseason
camp, Paterno had said Wallace
might have to miss one or two
games for cutting classes.
Since then, Wallace has
acquitted himself in Paterno’s
eyes with his grades and abiding
by other rules the coaching staff
put down. He’s played the first
two games, though he hasn’t
started.
“Both those kids, one does
something better than the other,”
Paterno said this week. “But we
intended to play both Timmons
and A.J., and I think that will
stay that way for a while.” — (AP)
