delves into past, present

In an age where e-mail and text messaging
has practically demolished the postal system, it
is soothing to reflect on another time when the
receipt of a letter could be as intimate as a kiss.
Pamela Newkirk’s “Letters from Black America”
(FSG, $30) presents a collection
of letters both personal
and political from the
18th century to the present
day, from Phyllis Wheatley
to the Rev. Jeremiah
Wright. “Letters” also fills a
literary and historical void
by presenting the pantheon
of African-American
experience through the
heartfelt correspondence of
the men and women who
lived through monumental
changes and pivotal
events, from the 1700s to
the 21st century, from
slavery to the war in Iraq.
The first-ever narrative
history of African
Americans told through
their own letters, this book
includes the thoughts of
politicians, writers and
entertainers, as well as
those of slaves, servicemen,
and domestic workers.
From a slave who
writes to his wife on the eve
of being sold to famous
documents like Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter
from Birmingham Jail,” these writings illuminate
struggles and triumphs, hardships and
glory, in the unforgettable words of the participants
themselves.
Newkirk, an award-winning journalist, is the
editor of “A Love No Less” and the author of
“Within the Veil: Black Journalist, White Media,”
Pamela Newkirk is the author of
“Letters from Black America.”

Media Criticism. She is and an associate professor
of journalism at New York University.
“This is an extraordinary peek at what went
on behind the closed doors of Black America for
nearly 300 years,” writes James McBride,

These snapshots of the
past are as varied as the
handwriting of the individuals
featured. The salutation
of a 1914 typewritten
letter W.E.B. Du Bois
reads, “Dear Little
Daughter,” while a handwritten
postcard from
actress-turned-activist
Fredi Washington to her
musician spouse has a
scrawled sense of urgency.
In return, Washington’s
husband, Lawrence Brown,
dashes off a telegraph “To
the sweetest ‘lil Easter
bunny I know.”
“Letters from Black
America” contributes greatly
to country’s literary tradition,
historical understanding
and self-knowledge.
“What emerges from the
more than 200 letters in
this volume is a textured,
compelling and unvarnished
portrait of African-
American life the highlights our shared humanity,”
notes Newkirk. “It is my hope that this volume
will contribute to the growing recognition of
African-American letters as historical treasures

When Officer Gary Skerski became the first
officer killed in the line of duty in Philadelphia in
a decade in May 2006, many prayed that others
would not join that statistic. Last year, four more
Philadelphia officers were killed in the line of
duty.
“When a Philadelphia police officer is killed in
the line of duty, it is a loss that is felt by all
Philadelphians,” noted Mayor Michael A. Nutter
of the death of Officer John Pawlowski earlier this
year. In all, 253 officers have been killed on duty.
In honor of those men and women in blue, the
Philadelphia Orchestra will perform the “Fallen
Heroes Tribute Concert” on Sunday. These
deceased officers are remembered as part of the
national “United We Serve” campaign that will
raise funds for the Fraternal Order of Police’s
Survivors’ Fund.
“The Philadelphia Orchestra is not just a world
class institution, it is a citizen of Philadelphia,”
said Joseph H. Jacovini, acting chairman, The
Philadelphia Orchestra. “As such, it feels the pain
of the families of the men and women who have
made the ultimate sacrifice in protecting our
community. The ‘Fallen Heroes Tribute Concert’
is an opportunity for the orchestra’s musicians,
staff, and board members to show their support
and commitment to those brave men and women,
and their families.”
Philadelphia Orchestra Associate Conductor
Rossen Milanov leads the concert, which will
include inspirational and patriotic works by
Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Edward
Elgar, John Williams, Samuel Ward, Irving
Berlin, and John Philip Sousa. Philadelphia
native soprano Mary Elizabeth Williams — who
was raised in the First Baptist Church of
Philadelphia — is the featured soloist.
Actor Tony Danza hosts the “Fallen Heroes
Tribute Concert” benefit on Sunday, Sept. 20, at 6
p.m. at The Mann Center for the Performing Arts
located 5201 Parkside Ave., Philadelphia. The event
